The Carrot Blog

I never planned on working in advertising. I was a photojournalist, honing my skills at my college's daily and passing through a couple of professional community newspapers. I loved meeting new people every day. I loved seeing new places. I loved telling stories.

What I didn't love was the newspaper industry. The grind of filling a daily paper, especially in an age where budget cuts mean staffs stretched thinner and thinner, was driving me crazy. You can't tell a story right when you've got two high school basketball games and a city council meeting to get to before deadline.

Eventually, I decided it was time to look for a new life. I started freelancing as a photographer and videographer, taking commercial jobs wherever I could. Being able to create the content I wanted to create, with the budgets to do it right, was a breath of fresh air. But, I still didn't imagine working at an advertising agency.

Then my old friend Averie Timm got a job at some Brooklyn company called Carrot Creative. The more she talked about it, the more interested I became. The newsrooms of my past were jaded, cynical and moribund. The company Averie described was totally different - filled with passionate, excited and ambitious people.

Thanks to Averie, I got the opportunity to sit down with Juliette Richey and talk shop. Meeting Juliette reaffirmed everything I had gleaned about Carrot. This is a company constantly looking forward. Carrot is digital-native and ambitious. The people here aren't afraid to push boundaries, but are grounded in a mastery of the fundamentals of the business.

At Carrot, I'm excited to be thrown into a world that's new to me. I'm excited to be faced with challenges I've never had to deal with before. I'm excited to tell stories.
