The Carrot Blog

Emily joins us from RIT as a JR. UX Designer.

"Are you serious?!" is probably not the correct word choice to instill confidence into the person who just offered you a job but it was all I could muster up.

Exactly a month ago today, I moved to Brooklyn to start working as a UX Designer for Carrot.

I had been following Carrot for some time before I first met Chris and Bonnie at an RIT career fair at the end of April. (I mean, a company at a career fair with a giant carrot pirate flag in a sea of otherwise plain and uninteresting tables automatically begs for a little extra attention but I had actually only gone with the intent to visit them.) I graduated at the end of May with a degree in graphic design and after a brief 24 hour period at home in Maryland, I trained up to Brooklyn to visit the Carrot offices for the first time! I left absolutely in love with everything about Carrot and Brooklyn. Hearing them talk about where they were and what kind of work was in store, it was hard not to immediately want to join the team. Not to mention the sweet office with a view of Manhattan.

Except two days later, I moved out to Chicago for a ten week internship in the Department of Design at Leo Burnett. I definitely took full advantage of my time out there, learning a lot, meeting people and eating all of the deep dish pizza I could find. However, it only took a few days to realize that I wasn't waking up in the morning to do what I loved.

While I love traditional design, I've always been drawn to the more technical/strategy side of design. I went to RIT afterall. I found myself oddly attracted to the beginning stages of a project - brainstorming, sketching and laying out the storyline of how people were going to use something.

Turns out that had a name: User Experience Design (UX).

And Carrot had an opening.

A third and final interview in August sealed the deal and showed me that this was really what I wanted to do. And four (very long) days later, I finally got the phone call. The phone call I had been waiting oh so impatiently for. To be a Carrot!

It has definitely been a whirlwind last few months but I couldn't be happier and can't wait to see what the next months will bring!
