Where there’s a Will, There’s a Wayby Ben
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
That's something my parents have told me since I was very young and it's something I take with me wherever I go. Thanks mom and dad.
Finally being here in Brooklyn feels like I've completed a major rite of passage. If I could go back and tell myself two years ago that I'd be living and working here, I would have thought I was insane - unless of course I was working at Carrot. If it were anywhere else, I don't think I would have even considered such a big move. I could have relocated to Brooklyn many months ago, but it wouldn't have felt right.
Uprooting my life to move away from where I grew up (in beautiful Upstate New York) wasn't an easy decision to make. If I was going to move to Brooklyn, I was either going to do it with Carrot or not at all. In my mind, there was no room to settle for anything but the best. I knew I would be taken care of at Carrot. All that was left to do was get hired.
I have been meeting off and on with Chris and Emily for over half a year. There were times I wasn't sure if this move was going to happen or not, but having known Chris for a handful of years, he's always been very honest, humble and true to his word. Timing is a funny thing and it doesn't always work in your favor. That became apparent very quickly through all parts of this dizzying process. But in times of distress, I would just remember what my parents have always told me and press on. There were many opportunities for me to stay comfortable in Rochester, but that isn't how I will grow as a person and that isn't how I do my best work. Eventually, things worked out and here I am - working as a UX Designer in Brooklyn at a company that really cares about its people, the work it produces and the clients they work with.
From the moment I walked in the door, one thing was certain: Carrot is electric. Everyone here honestly enjoys what they do and it has inspired me so much already. UX is incredibly important to me because it helps validate whether or not we truly make an impact on the people who use what we design and build. That's the core of what I care about and what drives me to do this every day. I couldn’t be happier to be here and to be a part of the UX team as it expands and evolves. This is the beginning of a new, exciting chapter of my life and I'm eager to share it with such a driven group of individuals. Carrot is everything I hoped it would be and it feels great to finally be here.
